April Malphurs: Layers - June 8-July 21

Congratulations to Park Elementary May Students of the Month!

A special thanks to the H.A.V.E grant program. This year in art we were able to participate in three field trips and bring art adventure kits from the Minneapolis Institute of Art for grades K-5. 3rd & 4th graders visited the Rochester Art Center to see the Native American art exhibit Dreaming our Future and 5th graders attended a tour at the Minneapolis Institute of Art and a scavenger hunt at the Walker Minneapolis Sculpture Park. These real world experiences for the students to experience art in person was a true gift and provided them with a whole new perspective on art. Thank you so much H.A.V.E!

Guest Artist, Justin Ek began working with LSH Park Elementary students in grades 2-5 this past week. Ek is a Mexican American artist, muralist and house painter from Mankato. Ek will spend 3 sessions each art class. This week he introduced students to the technique of underpainting. Ek also spoke of the importance of his heritage and ancestors in his own artwork. He helped the students create patterns based on their names, birth month and favorite colors that they are using in their own paintings.

Some 4th grade students in Mrs. Powell’s class created pin hole viewing cameras to view the eclipse. Unfortunately it was too cloudy, but we enjoyed the experience.
