From Our Schools to You

Technology is Rolling Down the Road

The Le Sueur - Henderson and St. Peter school districts are partnering in a number of different ways.

We currently offer two academies in health science and agri – science that are giving high school students from both districts opportunities and experiences that individually we can't offer. Our plan is to add an engineering academy next fall. In addition, we have classes offered at LS-H that are not offered at St. Peter and vice-versa.

One of the challenges the districts faced as they developed the academies is the geography issue. Twelve miles separate the two schools. You can't walk out of one class and down the hall to the next room. To complicate the matter even further, the academies are not always held at the same locations. Depending on the topic, students may be at one of the schools, or they may be out in the field - literally.

We need to get the students to where the learning will take place. True authentic learning means to engage students in real life situations and experiences. To do this, we need to transport our students to these experiences.

In the old days, time spent in the bus was lost time. Not today. Thanks to the cooperative efforts of the school districts and 4.0 Bus Service, the bus used for transporting many of our students between Le Sueur-Henderson and St. Peter is now equipped with wireless internet capabilities.

Academy Concept Continues to Grow

Le Sueur-Henderson and St. Peter High Schools cooperate to offer a Health Science Academy and an AgriScience Academy. These two academies were started in response to area employment needs and to help students learn some basic skills and to find out about the kinds of jobs in these career areas. What makes these academies different? Students spend part of their learning time outside of the classroom and in the field. Students in the health science academy spend about half their time at the River's Edge Health Campus in St. Peter and for the AgriScience Academy, students visit and perform learning activities at various Ag Partners places of business. This "real world" experience is critical and the direction education is headed.

So what's next? Today, we are developing an Engineering/Manufacturing Technology Academy. We have been working with MN State University Mankato and South Central College to determine what this program should look like. Learning technical skills and problem solving will be major components of this program. Students will still learn the skills we currently teach, but in an integrated manner. Instead of taking Drafting for 18 weeks and then Machine Shop for 18 weeks, these skills will be combined so students will draw plans and then build. We will also be enhancing opportunities in electronics, mecha-tronics, and engineering.

The partnership between Le Sueur-Henderson and St. Peter Schools makes these programs possible. The days of schools offering what they could afford is going by the wayside because through cooperation, both schools can provide more opportunities that are in the best interest of students. These opportunities will continue to grow as we search for the next academy program.

Schools have been slow to change, but the needs of society and capabilities of our world are requiring us to move much quicker. Please continue to read about the news from our schools and share this information with your friends and neighbors. Who knows where the next idea for an academy will come from? Don't forget to take in a game or concert, we have awesome kids in our communities and we all appreciate your support.
